The administration of diazacholesterol, a cholesterol-lowering agent, to unaffected and myotonic goats was associated with the appearance of myotonia in the former, worsening of myotonia in the latter, and accumulation of desmosterol in the plasma, erythrocyte membrane, and muscle in both groups. Discontinuation of diazacholesterol was accompanied by a marked reduction in plasma and erythrocyte desmosterol, by a concomitant rise in cholesterol, and by a return of muscle function to pretreatment status.
Key Words: myotonia, congenital cholesterol-lowering agent myotonia, drug-induced
