Secretion of urea and thiourea in sweat

The high sweat-to-serum urea ratio (greater than 1) was studied by correlating this ratio with serum urea concentration and sweat-to-serum osmolal ratios. In addition, the sweat-to-serum urea and thiourea ratios were studied in cat sweat as well as in human sweat. The results showed: 1) little relationship between sweat-to-serum urea ratios and sweat-to-serum osmolal ratios; 2) variable effects of serum urea concentrations on sweat-to-serum urea ratios; 3) sweat-to-serum thiourea ratios of 0.80 in man and in cats. These observations suggest that factors apart from back diffusion of water may account for some of the urea in sweat.
