Experimental heart block: effect on myocardial catecholamine concentration

George C. Kaiser 1, Max Jellinek 1, Theodore Cooper 1, and C. Rollins Hanlon 1

1 St. Louis University Surgical Service, Veterans Administration Hospital, and Department of Surgery, St. Louis University, St. Louis, Missouri

Surgically induced complete heart block in the dog results in decreased levels of myocardial catecholamines. Sham operations which involve atriotomy and manipulation of the atrial septum cause less significant changes. These reductions in myocardial catecholamine levels may be due to destruction of adrenergic, intracardiac nerves or to a relatively increased utilization of catecholamines.

Key Words: atrioventricular dissociation • complete heart block • surgical heart block • sympathetic nerves • nervous regulation of the heart • congestive heart failure
