The pressor activity of pure natural asp1ileu5-angiotensin II, and synthetic asparginyl1-val5, asp1-val5, asp1-ileu5, and ß-asp1-val5-angiotensin II was determined in a nephrectomized pithed cat. All were of equal potency with the exception of ß-asp1-val5-angiotensin which was slightly more active. When assayed on the aortic strip asparginyl1-val5 had 25% and ß-asp1-val5-angiotensin had 75% of the activity of natural angiotensin. The difference in action of the angiotensin peptides can not be explained by their rate of destruction by peptidases. Marked variation in the specificity of different receptors might be responsible. Asparginyl1-val5-angiotensin II should not be used as a standard in assaying natural angiotensin unless the specificity of the test system has been determined.
