Oxygen exchange of subcutaneous gas cavities in rats

Johannes Piiper 1

1 Medizinische Forschungsanstalt der Max-Planck-Gesellschaft, Göttingen, Germany

The O2 exchange of subcutaneous gas cavities initially filled with gas mixtures of varying O2 fraction was measured in unanesthetized rats breathing air. The net exchange rate of O2 was compared to the cavity-tissue O2 pressure gradient and to the carriage of O2 by the blood. The results suggest that diffusion, and not perfusion, was the rate-limiting process.

Key Words: gas exchange • diffusion • perfusion
