The thiocyanate space of rat brain was found to be a function of the plasma level of the ion, although, after several doses of 15 mm/kg sodium thiocyanate, a dynamic equilibrium was readily established and maintained between brain and plasma. Although potentially distensible, a figure of 5%, or less, is suggested for the normal volume of the extracellular compartment of rat brain.
