Quantitative importance of plasma glucose for synthesis of milk fat glycerol

Jack R. Luick 1 and Max Kleiber 1

1 Department of Animal Husbandry, University of California, Davis, California

A study was made of the relationship between plasma glucose and milk fat glycerol following the injection of U-C14 glucose into four lactating cows. We have shown that plasma glucose contributes more than 70% of the C required for glycerol synthesis. The metabolic pathways by which circulating glucose C might be incorporated into glycerol were discussed.
