Paraventricular nuclei, neurohypophysis, and parturition

A quantitative determination of oxytocic activity in the neurohypophysis and hypothalamus of the adult cat and dog was performed, using the rat uterus contraction method. Stereotaxically placed lesions in the paraventricular nuclei of the adult cat produced a marked depletion of oxytocic activity in the neurohypophysis. Experimental lesions in these nuclei in the pregnant cat resulted in marked dystocia at the end of the gestation period.
