Role of anions in the fibrillatory process

William C. Holland 1 and Antonio A. Sekul 1

1 Department of Pharmacology, University of Mississippi School of Medicine, Jackson, Mississippi

Replacement of Cl in Ringer's solution with SCN, I, Br and NO3 prevents or diminishes the incidence of acetylcholine-induced atrial fibrillation. The relative order of effectiveness being SCN > I > Br > NO3. The thesis is developed that maintenance of fibrillation depends upon the rate of entry of Cl into a thin barrier, probably the cell membrane. The antiarrhythmic properties of foreign anions result from their adsorption in this barrier, thereby impeding the entry of Cl.
