Adrenal cortical hormone and incorporation of C¹⁴ from amino acid precursors into muscle protein

The incorporation of C¹⁴ from labeled glucose, carboxylic acids and bicarbonate into the protein of isolated rat diaphragm was enhanced by adrenalectomy and decreased by cortisone treatment. The incorporation of radioactivity from pyruvate-3-C¹⁴ into the protein of diaphragms from adrenalectomized rats was not appreciably altered by a 20-fold change in pyruvate concentration. Incorporation of C¹⁴ from glucose-1-C¹⁴ and from glucose-6-C¹⁴ was the same, as was the magnitude of the increase after adrenalectomy.
