Effect of intravenous infusions of calcium on renal concentrating ability

David Beck 1, Howard Levitin 1, and Franklin H. Epstein 1

1 Department of Internal Medicine, Yale University School of Medicine, New Haven, Connecticut

Acute hypercalcemia was produced by infusing calcium gluconate intravenously in dogs undergoing mannitol diuresis. The fraction of filtered sodium which was reabsorbed decreased, in association with a fall in glomerular filtration rate. Slight to moderate decreases in TcH2O were observed, but urine did not become hypotonic to plasma.
