Effects of epinephrine on lactic and keto-acid production, phosphate balance and pH changes in the isolated perfused frog liver

Albert B. Craig JR. 1

1 Department of Physiology, University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry, Rochester, New York

The study of the isolated perfused frog liver has been extended to show that epinephrine will cause an increase in lactic acid and keto-acid production. This reaction is brief and corresponds to the period of potassium loss. A decrease in the pH of the effluent was noted. The duration of this change mimics the course of increased glucose production. No change in the phosphate balance could be detected. These results are discussed as they relate to the present views of epinephrine action.
