Goats exposed throughout the year to environmental conditions prevailing in a temperate climate have shown in the winter time an increased thickness of the Malpighian and of the horny layers and a decreased response to a cold-immersion test. A significant increase in number of layers in the stratum corneum was observed, with electron microscope techniques, in rats exposed to cold for 8 weeks at 6°C.
