The effects of reserpine on the cardiac excitability of the atrium and ventricle were studied in the turtle. Reserpine in concentrations of 0.5 and 1.0 mg/kg was found to have a quinidine-like action on cardiac excitability. This was manifested by a prolongation of latency, an increase in duration of the absolute and relative refractory periods and an elevation of diastolic threshold. When compared to quinidine in similar dosage, reserpine was appreciably less active.
