Somatic evoked responses in the dorsal column and anterolateral column of the cervical spinal cord in 14 cats are shown to have differential susceptibility to anesthetic agents. Nitrous oxide, cyclopropane and Nembutal have more effect on the postsynaptic anterolateral column potentials than on the larger fiber presynaptic dorsal column or postsynaptic medial lemniscus responses. The results corroborate the previous evidence indicating greater susceptibility of small fiber afferent systems to anesthetic agents.
