Defects in Optokinetic Afternystagmus in Lesions of the Brain Stem

S. Shanzer 1, P. Teng 1, H. P. Krieger 1, and M. B. Bender 1

1 From the Department of Neurology, the Mount Sinai Hospital, New York City

Optokinetic afternystagmus (OKAN) was investigated in 50 rhesus monkeys. All had electrolytic lesions in the brain stem. Twenty-two of them showed a unilateral defect in OKAN. This defect was correlated with the location of the lesion in the oculomotor pathways. Twenty-eight monkeys showed no such defect. In absence of other measurable signs OKAN can serve as a sensitive index of a type of oculomotor dysfunction.
