Biphasic Hyperferremia Induced in Rats by X-Irradiation

G. S. Melville JR. 1, F. P. Conte 1, and A. C. Upton 1

1 From the Biology Division, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Oak Ridge, Tennessee

The hyperferremia that developed in rats after a single dose of 75–225 r of total-body X-irradiation occurred in two distinct phases. A transient rise in plasma iron occurred within the first 24 hours after irradiation, and a more prolonged elevation took place during the 2nd week after exposure. The concentration of plasma iron in normal rats varied from day to day and in relation to the hour of sampling.
