Reduction in Pancreatic Proteinase After Hypophysectomy

Burton L. Baker 1, Norma L. Reid 1, and Nancy Thoms 1

1 From the Department of Anatomy, University of Michigan Medical School, Ann Arbor, Michigan

Proteinase activity was determined in the pancreas of hypophysectomized and nonhypophysectomized rats. Following activiation with enterokinase, pancreatic homogenates were digested with a hemoglobin substrate and activity ascertained colorimetrically in terms of tyrosine released. When calculated on the basis of activity per gram of pancreas, total activity or total activity in relation to body weight, the values were significantly lower in hypophysectomized as contrasted to nonhypophysectomized rats.
