In unanesthetized cats, immobilized with Flaxedil, augmenting responses were induced on the sensori-motor cortex by thalamic excitation. Reticular stimulation blocked both the cortical response and the synchronous pyramidal discharge, normally related in time to the positive component of the cortical potential. When reticular stimulation reduced only the negative cortical deflection leaving unaffected the positive component, the pyramidal volley remained unmodified.
