Enlargement of the Liver in Sprague-Dawley Rats Following Whole-Body X-Irradiation

Helen Supplee 1, E. O. Weinman 1, and C. Entenman 1

1 From the Biochemistry Branch, U. S. Naval Radiological Defense Laboratory, San Francisco, California

A significant increase in liver mass was observed in rats as early as 6 hours after exposure to as small a dose as 200 r of 250 kvp x-rays. Water, lipids and glycogen contribute to the increase in mass; however, the most striking change was in the glycogen content.
