In dogs subjected to a single hemorrhage equivalent to 4% of the body weight, 2 and 5-mg/kg doses of chlorpromazine administered 30 minutes before hemorrhage and 2 mg/kg given immediately after hemorrhage exerted a deleterious effect in terms of survival. When the drug was given 5 hours before hemorrhage no injurious effect on survival was observed. The reduced frequency of survival appeared to be related to the autonomic blocking activity of the chlorpromazine.
