Influence of Blood pH on Procaine Toxicity

Walter G. Mitchell 1 and Jay Jacoby 1

1 From the Department of Physiology and Division of Anesthesiology, Ohio State University College of Medicine, Columbus, Ohio

Groups of mice were rendered acidotic by injections of acetazoleamide (1.0 gm/kg) and alkalotic by injections of NaHCO3 (2.0 gm/kg). Dosage-mortality curves showed procaine toxicity to be increased in acidotic mice and decreased in alkalotic mice as compared to controls. The effect of acid-base balance disturbance on the convulsant effect of procaine was not sufficiently clear-cut to permit conclusions to be drawn. The effects seen probably reflect changes in the cardiotoxic action of procaine.
