Effect of Thyroid-Active Substances on the Betaine-Homocysteine Transmethylase Activity of Rat Liver

A. E. Harper 1, L. E. Ericson 1, R. E. Boldt 1, and C. A. Elvehjem 1

1 From the Department of Biochemistry, College of Agriculture, University of Wisconsin, Madison, Wisconsin

The incorporation of iodinated casein or desiccated thyroid into the diets of rats, or the subcutaneous injection of l-thyroxine, caused a decrease in the liver betaine-homocysteine transmethylase activity. Supplementation with dried, defatted pork partially counteracted the effect of iodinated casein.
