Renal cortical slices from four strains of rats were incubated with p-aminohippurate (PAH) and the concentration gradient for PAH (S/M PAH) was determined. Acetate ion (Ac) at a concentration of 0.01 m failed to induce the expected increase in S/M PAH. At larger concentrations of Ac, the S/M PAH was depressed. Maximal depression occurred when the concentration of Ac was 0.1 m. Ac produced a concurrent increase in the respiratory rate, an increase in the terminal tissue weight, and no significant alteration of the rate of N-acetylation of PAH.
